REEF Update: Sustainable Chicken Farming

Strathclyde Energy for Development

A Scottish Government funded REEF grant was awarded to a chicken farmer who was looking to boost production of her popular produce.

The system is novel in  Malawi as it uses solar power to provide lighting in the chicken barn.  This lighting helps to speed up the production time of the chickens, lowering production costs and providing more for the market on a more regular basis.

The chicken farm consists of a single brick barn with a small segregated section where brooding of young chickens takes place.  Heat is provided from a stove which keeps the chickens warm and vastly increases survival rates.  This makes the business more sustainable as the owner can buy chicks with confidence that they will survive to adulthood.
